Maruti Swift, Fronx, Baleno to Go Hybrid for Over 35 Kmpl Mileage

Maruti Suzuki is expanding its lineup with new passenger cars and electric vehicles for the Indian market. While currently offering mild-hybrid and strong hybrid cars like the Invicto and Grand Vitara the company is developing its own HEV system. The upcoming seven-seater Grand Vitara set for release next year will be the last model featuring Toyota-sourced strong hybrid technology. Maruti's HEV system will debut in the facelifted Fronx next year followed by implementation in the next-generation Baleno in 2026 and future Swift models.

This system utilizes a petrol engine as a range extender generating electricity to power the electric motor which drives the wheels. The 1.2L Z series three-cylinder engine will play a crucial role in this technology. Similar to Nissan's e-Power technology Maruti Suzuki's HEV system prioritizes electric propulsion resulting in lower production and maintenance costs compared to traditional hybrids.

The Fronx compact SUV coupe has gained popularity since its launch currently offered with 1.2L NA petrol and 1.0L turbo petrol engines. The next-gen Swift and Dzire will arrive soon but the HEV system will be introduced in their subsequent iterations. The upcoming Baleno internally codenamed YTA is estimated to have an annual production of 60 000 units and will boast a claimed fuel efficiency of over 35 kmpl offering greater fuel efficiency without diesel options.
