Maruti Ordered to Refund Car Price Due to Airbag Failure in Accident

The District Consumer Forum has issued a directive mandating Maruti Suzuki to reimburse the entire cost of the car to a customer due to the non-deployment of airbags during an accident. The complainant a resident of Indianoor in Malappuram district Kerala suffered severe injuries in a 2021 car accident and attributed the extent of his injuries to the failure of the airbags to deploy.

Following an inspection by a motor vehicle inspector it was determined that the car's airbag was non-functional at the time of the accident. Subsequently the District Consumer Forum ruled in favor of the complainant ordering Maruti Suzuki to compensate them with Rs 4 35 854. Additionally the carmaker has been instructed to pay Rs 20 000 in court fees as part of the resolution.
