It might sound unbelievable, but Pune-based Northway Motors, a leading name in EV research and development, has crafted a Maruti Ignis EV capable of reaching speeds up to 200 kph. This project, born out of passion in 2021, has resulted in the fastest Maruti car ever seen.

The Maruti Ignis EV is a unique creation by Northway Motors, experts in crafting custom EV conversion kits. Initially developed in 2021, this conversion, based on the Alpha variant of the Ignis, marks the debut of a manual EV. According to a representative from Northway Motors, the goal behind creating the Ignis was simple: to produce an exceptionally high-powered EV.

Constructed in 2021 with minimal alterations like coil-over suspension and brake upgrades, the Ignis EV lay idle until recent updates. The vehicle incorporates four battery packs placed strategically under the front and rear seats, all certified by AIS standards. With these updates and a minor software tweak introduced in early 2024, the Ignis EV now boasts a top speed of 200 kph, achieved while retaining the 5-speed manual gearbox, allowing for enhanced torque delivery and effortless acceleration.

Priced at Rs 12.5 lakh for the short-range model and Rs 14.5 lakh for the long-range variant, the Ignis EV kit is not currently available for retail purchase, as Northway Motors focuses on its B2B endeavors. Nonetheless, all EV conversion kits by the company are legally certified by ARAI and homologated in India. Beyond the Ignis EV, Northway Motors has also developed low-powered EV kits for fleet operations on vehicles like the Maruti Swift Dzire and for the Tata Ace.

While electric vehicles are still emerging, innovative projects like the Maruti Ignis EV conversion kit offer a glimpse into the future, potentially sparking greater interest in electric mobility among consumers.
