Honda Diabolus: CL300 scrambler with square headlights.

Classic motorcycles with a retro flair are currently experiencing a surge in popularity, and within this broad category, scramblers have captured the enthusiasm of enthusiasts more than traditional classics. Honda's CL lineup caters to this specific demographic, and renowned motorcycle modifier, K-Speed has introduced a customized version, the Diabolus, based on the Honda CL 300 Scrambler.

The Honda Diabolus, a creation of Thailand-based K-Speed Customs, represents a special take on the CL300 Scrambler. K-Speed aimed to design an authentic Scrambler-style motorcycle that pays homage to the legends of the past. While initially showcased with the CL300, the customization kit is so versatile that it can also be applied to the larger Honda CL500. It is worth noting that Honda CL300 has also been patented in India.

Although there is speculation about the possible launch, it could also be part of Honda's regular patent process. The CL300 shares its engine with the CB300R, which recently got a significant price cut in India. With its new price, the CB300R emerges as a strong competitor for the Triumph Speed 400. K-Speed's work on the CL300 is particularly commendable, offering a blend of raw, minimalist and wild design that goes far beyond Honda's original vision.

Modifications include replacing Honda's round headlight with a sleek square LED unit located just below the triple tree. The stock front mudguard gives way to a longer off-road styled unit, and the handlebar features retro switchgear. However, the frame, fuel tank and engine of the bike remain unchanged with a substantial bash plate. The exhaust has been changed from the stock design to an up-swept twin end can design that goes under the engine and then rises up.

The seat retains the same upholstery pattern but is now a custom single-seater unit. The rear fender is quite short, contributing to a clean appearance that proudly displays the sturdy tires, especially notable for their off-road capability compared to the stock ones. The Diabolus stands out with its attractive wire-spoke wheels, which are different from the standard alloy units on the CL300. The rear subframe and round-section swingarm remain unchanged.

Additional modifications include RSU telescopic front forks with gaiters, a rear dual-shock absorber setup, a re-positioned round speedometer and custom bar-end mirrors. The single-cylinder 286cc DOHC 4V engine, shared with the CB300R, produces 31 bhp and 27.5 Nm. A 6-speed gearbox and slipper clutch are standard features. The ergonomic design appears straightforward, allowing the rider to navigate off-road trails with confidence. K-Speed's custom Diabolus for the CL300 Scrambler is one of the coolest modifications to Honda's CL range, inspiring more manufacturers to reintroduce square headlights for that authentic retro and vintage appeal.
