Toyota Land Cruiser FJ, a budget-friendly Fortuner alternative, set to launch this year.

Toyota showcased an array of futuristic concepts at the Japan Mobility Show 2023 with the IMV 0 concept gaining notable attention. This concept built on the Innovative International Multi-purpose Vehicle (IMV) architecture – a foundation for Toyota's utility vehicles like the Hilux and Fortuner was particularly highlighted.

While both the Hilux and Fortuner continue to utilize the IMV platform the Innova has undergone a transition to the more modern TNGA-C allowing for a conventional front-wheel-drive layout especially in its Hycross variant. The IMV 0 pickup concept unveiled in Tokyo prioritizes affordability and enhanced utility-based customization options.

In line with this commitment Toyota introduced the Hilux Champ in Thailand in November 2023 priced affordably at $13 000 (approximately Rs. 11 lakh). The Fortuner seems poised for a similar approach as a more compact and affordable version maintaining its off-road DNA is rumored to be in development for a potential debut later this year. This move aligns with the popularity of the Fortuner as a full-size SUV with robust 4×4 capabilities particularly in Asian markets.

Recent years have seen a significant price increase for the Fortuner making it less accessible for many potential buyers despite consistent sales figures. The modular design of the IMV 0 platform allows Toyota to explore different body styles and the company has expressed its intent to venture into new avenues using this architecture.

While models based on the IMV 0 platform may lack certain premium amenities compared to the current Fortuner the focus on practicality and spaciousness is expected to be a key selling point. Global reports suggest that Toyota is actively involved in the development of an SUV project centered around the IMV 0 platform aiming to introduce a more budget-friendly version of the Fortuner. Leveraging the existing GD series diesel engine which is anticipated to incorporate mild-hybrid technology soon this new project could potentially be branded as the Land Cruiser FJ. Given the swift introduction of the Hilux Champ following the IMV 0 pickup concept the launch of the more affordable Fortuner is anticipated in the near future.
