Pune: Driving Licenses Suspended for Violations

Pune January 30 2024: A noteworthy enhancement in the enforcement of traffic regulations within the city has been observed marked by rigorous actions taken against violators. Over the past year more than a thousand vehicle permits have been suspended for durations spanning 3 to 6 months due to non-compliance with regulations. On a daily basis an average of three drivers face penalties for breaching traffic rules.

This crackdown on traffic violations results from a collaborative initiative between the Traffic Police and the Regional Transport Office (RTO). The Traffic Police relay the names of drivers consistently flouting traffic laws to the RTO which subsequently recommends permit suspensions leading to prompt implementation. The RTO carries out the suspension of permits based on the recommendations forwarded by the police.

In the preceding year alone the RTO suspended permits for over a thousand drivers. Various offenses including driving under the influence of alcohol overspeeding signal violations failure to wear helmets mobile phone usage while driving overloading vehicles and exceeding passenger limits have all resulted in penalties for offenders. Information about permit suspensions is conveyed to the concerned drivers through online channels. Those caught driving during the suspension period may incur fines of up to five thousand rupees and their vehicles may be seized.

In 2023 the suspension of permits for various violations was as follows:

– Signal violations: 222
– Mobile phone usage while driving: 153
– Overspeeding: 170
– Driving under the influence of alcohol: 141
– Triple seat riding: 282

Permits were suspended for a duration of 3 months for offenses such as overspeeding signal violations failure to wear helmets mobile phone usage while driving overloading vehicles and exceeding passenger limits.

Sanjeev Bhor Regional Transport Officer emphasized the crucial importance of adhering to traffic regulations and advocated for the suspension of permits for violators. This measure is primarily implemented to uphold discipline on the roads.
