Koregaon Park tops drink-driving violations in Pune.

So far this year, out of the total 301 cases in the city, 132 cases of drunk driving have been reported in Pune's Koregaon Park area. To tackle this problem, police are planning to suspend the driving licenses of repeat offenders in an effort to discourage such dangerous behaviour.

As of October 11, 2023, the Pune Traffic Police Department has registered 301 cases of drunk driving this year. Of these, Koregaon Park alone has 132 cases, while Shivajinagar and Kondhwa areas have reported 20 and 19 cases respectively.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP), Traffic Department, Vijaykumar Magar said, Our traffic police are patrolling the roads to prevent incidents of drunk driving in the city. Till October this year, we have registered 301 cases. Drinking and driving across Pune. Koregaon Park, Shivajinagar and Kondhwa are hotspots of this issue, but our police are taking necessary action against the violators.

Magar also stressed that the police are planning to take strict action to deal with these violations and reduce the incidence of fatal accidents.

According to traffic department data, 74 cases were reported in March, followed by 53 cases in August and 49 cases in May. However, Vivek Velenkar of Sajjag Nagrik Manch suggested that limited resources, such as lack of breathalyzers and inadequate night traffic duties, could impact the police's ability to respond proactively. He believes that regular patrolling and daily enforcement of fines is necessary to create a strong deterrent against drunk driving among the public.
