NHAI and police commence the closure of illegal NH-48 exits and entry points.

A recent survey has identified more than 50 unauthorized entry and exit points on the 40-km long Delhi-Gurgaon Expressway, and these are responsible for almost half of the road accidents on the route. In response to this issue, the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) and Gurugram Police have started efforts to close these illegal access points on the expressway. According to police officials familiar with the situation, all such unauthorized exits will be stopped within 15 days.

Problematic entry and exit points between the defunct Sirhaul toll plaza and Kapriwas border were discovered during a recent survey. These points have been identified as major factors contributing to road accidents on the expressway.

Gurugram Traffic Police said that till October 29 this year, at least 69 deaths have occurred in road accidents on this highway. There were 117 deaths in 2022, 91 in 2021 and 124 in 2020.

Gurugram Deputy Commissioner (DC) Nishant Kumar Yadav said, There are only six to seven legal exits on the expressway in Gurugram. Therefore, businesses like petrol pumps, hotels and restaurants have created illegal entries and exits. Routes to provide better access to passengers to their establishments. They did this by removing or demolishing road medians and digging up the highway with earthmovers.

NHAI's Regional Transport Authority (RTA) had conducted a survey in February to identify all these illegal exits on National Highway 48. After the survey, a report was submitted to the DC. Gurugram traffic police also sent a report to NHAI, requesting the highway authority to close these unauthorized exits by reconstructing the medians or forcing the offenders to do so.

To address this issue, authorities have decided to close down these illegal access points by using concrete slabs and installing grills, as well as imposing fines on offenders. This decision was taken in the monthly meeting of the District Road Safety Committee under the chairmanship of DC.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (Traffic) Virendra Vij said, We started closing all these illegal points on Sunday. If they are found open again, a First Information Report will be filed against those responsible. He also pointed out that these unauthorized entry and exit points often cause vehicles to slow down, leading to sudden braking and resulting in accidents.
