According to a senior government official, the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) constructed 12,349 kilometers of national highways in the fiscal year 2023-24, marking the second-highest construction rate in its history. This follows the record construction of 13,327 kilometers in 2020-21.
In the preceding years, national highways of 10,331 kilometers were constructed in 2022-23, slightly less than the 10,457 kilometers built in 2021-22. In 2019-20, highways of 10,237 kilometers were completed.
Furthermore, the official noted that the ministry awarded 8,581 national highway projects in the fiscal year 2023-24.
Additionally, the government initiated a pilot project aimed at offering cashless treatment to victims of road accidents. Under this scheme, accident victims will be eligible for cashless treatment of up to Rs 1.5 lakh.
