Five States Contribute 50% of National Highway Toll Collection

Toll collection on India's national highways has increased in recent years due to the mandatory adoption of FASTag. A staggering ₹48,028.22 crore was collected from across the country in the financial year 2022-23. Among states, despite Maharashtra having the longest national highway network, Uttar Pradesh (₹5,583.43 crore) and Rajasthan (₹5,084.50 crore) top the list.

Maharashtra stood third in toll collection with ₹4,660.21 crore, while Gujarat (₹4,518.96 crore) and Tamil Nadu (₹3,817.48 crore) remained in the top five, contributing almost half of the total toll collection.

Notably, these states have consistently remained in the top five in toll collection for at least the last five years, with the only change this year being Maharashtra's third-place ranking, as Gujarat usually holds this position.

L&T Vadodara toll plaza in Gujarat recorded the highest toll collection in the country at ₹455.94 crore during the 2022-23 financial year. At least 14 of the top 100 toll plazas are located in Gujarat, accounting for about 70% of the state's total toll collection, totaling ₹3,045.96 crore.

Among these top 100 toll plazas, which collectively collected ₹18,386.65 crore, Uttar Pradesh had the highest contribution of ₹2,639.58 crore with 15 locations. Gujarat leads in terms of total amount collected, followed by Rajasthan, with 13 toll plazas in the top 100, earning ₹2,651.32 crore.

What is particularly noteworthy about Gujarat's performance is that per kilometer toll collection on national highways averages about ₹68 lakh per kilometre. In contrast, Maharashtra's average is just ₹26 lakh per kilometre. According to the data of the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways, this figure is around Rs 33 lakh per kilometer across the country.

Despite some states charging low toll amounts, some states have excelled in earnings per kilometre. Haryana, which has about 3,200 km of national highways, earned ₹2,501.51 crore in 2022-23, or about ₹80 lakh per kilometre. Similarly, the average earning per kilometer from national highways in West Bengal is ₹71.47 lakh.
