Kerala forms a senior working committee for the Hydrogen Economy Mission.

In order to provide strategic advice, enable partnerships, collaborations, and support to the Mission, the Kerala government on Wednesday established the Kerala Hydrogen Economy Mission.

To encourage investments in the green hydrogen sector and turn the state into a green hydrogen centre, the state government intends to develop a strategic roadmap, policy formulations, and implementation strategies. Only approximately 10% of Kerala's 8,600 MW of renewable energy potential is being used.

Kerala is establishing itself as the world's first hydrogen economy. According to K R Jyothilal, principal secretary for power and general administration for the Government of Kerala, Kerala is the location where the oceans converge and will be the hub of global trade in the twenty-first century thanks to the export of green hydrogen from the Adani trans-shipment port at Vizhinjam.

The Executive Vice-Chairperson of K-DISC serves as the working group's chairman, and its members include the heads of several departments, including Power, Industries, Water Resources, and Transport, in addition to the Chairman and Managing Director of Kerala State Electricity Board, the CEO of the Agency for New and Renewable Energy Research and Technology, the Director of the Energy Management Center, the MD of Cochin International Airport, the MD of Travancore Cochin Chemicals, and others.

Petronet LNG, NTPC, L&T, Reliance Energy, Air Products, Indian Oil, GAIL, Cochin Shipyard, Cochin Port Trust, Tata, HPCL, BPCL, Hydrogen Pro, Greenstat, Adani Green Energy, The Fertilizers and Chemicals Travancore Ltd, World Wide Wind, Kawasaki, Innovation Norway, Air Products, and Linde are among the businesses with an interest in the state's green hydrogen sector.

Kerala is regarded as having favourable geographic conditions for producing green hydrogen because to its high rainfall, solar radiation, wind potential, and availability of water bodies for offshore and floating solar power generation. Green hydrogen is expected to be essential to the state government's goal of becoming carbon neutral by 2050.

The Uttar Pradesh government released a draught policy earlier this month with the goal of promoting and producing green hydrogen as well as making the state a 100% consumer of green hydrogen and green ammonia by 2035.
