The first green hydrogen blending project in India is launched by NTPC.

New Delhi: The first green hydrogen blending facility in India has been put into operation, according to state-owned power company National Thermal Power Corporation Limited (NTPC) on Tuesday. The initiative, a collaboration between NTPC and Gujarat Gas Ltd (GGL), has begun mixing green hydrogen into the  Piped Natural Gas (PNG) network of the NTPC Kawas township in Surat.

The project's head of project, P. Ram Prasad, launched the first molecule of green hydrogen into motion in front of several top executives from NTPC Kawas and GGL, according to the official news release.

The homes in Kawas Township in Adityanagar, Surat, will get H2-natural gas from this setup. By electrolyzing water with power from a 1-MW floating solar project that has already been constructed, green hydrogen is produced at Kawas, it was said.

According to the press release, the Petroleum and Natural Gas Regulatory Board has given its blessing to the first 5% blending of green hydrogen with PNG, which will be increased gradually to 20%. Only a few of elite nations, including the UK, Germany, and Australia, are capable of pulling off this accomplishment. India would then take centre stage in the global hydrogen economy as a result.

By exporting green chemicals and hydrogen to other countries, India may not only drastically lower its need to purchase hydrocarbons but also generate foreign exchange. When combined with natural gas, green hydrogen decreases CO2 emissions while maintaining the same net heating content.
