Bhairon Marg underpass in Delhi now open both ways.

A section of the Bhairon Marg underpass in Delhi has been partially opened for two-way traffic, connecting Bhairon Marg/Mathura Road to Ring Road/Sarai Kale Khan, according to officials from the Delhi Public Works Department (PWD). The underpass consists of two parallel tunnel sections—a two-lane segment and a three-lane one. The two-lane segment is now open for traffic, marked by temporary cones allowing two-way movement on the 110-meter stretch until the larger tunnel is fully operational.

The partial opening aims to alleviate traffic congestion along the busy corridor, particularly on the IP Estate section of the Ring Road leading to Ghaziabad/Noida. The overall project, once complete, is expected to provide Ghaziabad-bound traffic with signal-free access.

While officials are optimistic about the benefits, experts caution that traffic flow on the single lanes of the underpass must be efficiently managed to prevent bottlenecks. The wider three-lane segment is projected to take several more months to open, as authorities work on restoring the tunnel, which suffered extensive damage during floods in July.

During a spot check, it was observed that many commuters were unaware of the underpass's opening, and key signboards were yet to be installed. Security personnel were deployed at exit points to guide traffic. Commuters expressed hope for improved connectivity, acknowledging the historical inconvenience of taking detours and U-turns. However, concerns were raised about potential congestion during peak hours in the single-lane underpass.
