Overview of new driving license rules in 2024

Revamping Driving License Procedures

Significant changes have been implemented to the driving license protocols. As per new changes, moving forward, there is no need of undergoing a training test conducted by government agencies such as the Regional Transportation Office (RTO) to obtain their license. Instead of RTO, private institutions shall be authorized moving forward to administer tests and issue driving license certificates.

Several amendments aimed at improving road safety and reducing environmental pollution shall be introduced in the new rule which shall see the light of the day from June 1, 2024.

Notably, no vehicle older than 15 years will be allowed to run starting April 1, 2024. This move comes as a part to address pollution concerns. Moving forward, stern penalties shall be imposed for violations of driving license regulations, including fines of up to Rs. 1 lakh for offenders.

Eliminating any need for physically visiting the RTO offices, applicants can now complete the entire process online via website, thus reducing the waiting time.

Additionally, different criterion has been introduced for different vehicle categories.

Overhauling Driving License Protocols

Those who are running or plan to start a private driving training center, will need to seek accreditation must meet certain criteria, including land area requirements and qualifications for trainers.

Mandated to provide both, comprehensive theoretical and practical training, these centres shall provide sufficient training to applicants.

One must be at least 18 years old to apply for a new driving license. One must fill online application process, upload necessary documents and make the necessary payment online.

Then applicants should visit RTO in order to verify their driving skills, after which their license will be issued if they meet the criteria.
