Mumbai-Pune Expressway Sets New Speed Limits for Safety

The Yashwantrao Chavan Expressway, also known as the Mumbai-Pune Expressway, has recently implemented new speed limits for vehicles, following a survey conducted by a team of experts. These revised limits apply to both the flat stretches and the ghat sections spanning the 94-kilometer fast lane.

Sukhwinder Singh, additional director general of police (Traffic) for Maharashtra, issued a notice regarding these changes in response to commuters experiencing difficulties in adhering to the previous speed limits, especially in the ghat areas.

The new speed limits vary according to vehicle category. For M-1 category vehicles, the speed limit is now set at 100 km/h on flat terrain and 60 km/h in ghat regions. Passenger vehicles carrying nine or more passengers, categorized as M-2 and M-3, have a speed limit of 80 km/h on flat areas and 40 km/h in ghat sections. Similarly, all goods vehicles fall under the N category, with a speed limit of 80 km/h on flat surfaces and 40 km/h in ghat areas.

These adjustments were made following a comprehensive survey conducted by State Highway officials, including those from Pune division, Raigad zone, Panvel, and local police, along with the Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC) and IRB Infra Development. The decision was reached during a joint meeting on April 15, after considering the survey results and expert opinions.

The survey, spanning 15 days, highlighted the potential risks associated with vehicles traveling at low speeds, underscoring the need for appropriate speed limits to prevent accidents. Therefore, based on the insights gleaned from the survey and discussions with experts, these adjustments were deemed necessary for enhancing safety on the expressway.
