Mumbai's Rs 150-cr bridge blunder

The reconstruction of the Barfiwala flyover, which currently presents misalignment issues with the Gopal Krishna Gokhale Bridge in Andheri, is estimated to cost more than Rs 150 crore. The flyover, built by the Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC) and completed in 2012 after facing delays, originally had a cost of Rs 23 crore, which doubled to Rs 46 crore during construction.

Traffic management on the busy S V Road contributed significantly to the project's prolonged timeline. If reconstruction is deemed necessary, the current market rate suggests that the cost will likely exceed Rs 150 crore. The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) is awaiting recommendations from the Veermata Jijabai Technological Institute (VJTI) and the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) to address the misalignment issue.

Residents had persistently raised concerns, leading to the BMC opening the Gokhale bridge on February 26. However, the misalignment with the Barfiwala flyover created additional traffic issues on SV Road junction in Andheri West. The Barfiwala flyover, constructed to connect Juhu galli to Gokhale bridge, faced delays due to traffic on SV Road, land acquisition, and the relocation of underground utilities.

Dhaval Shah, founder of the Lokhandwala Oshiwara Citizens Association, expressed concerns about the extended timeline for reconstruction, estimating it to take four to five years considering the tender process, work order, and construction activities. The BMC had initiated the reconstruction of the Gokhale bridge in 2020, which had one of its footpaths collapse in 2018, indicating awareness of potential misalignment with the Barfiwala flyover.
