Traffic chaos feared in Mumbai with BEST's proposed SCLR changes.

The BEST undertaking has drawn the ire of the traffic police by proposing installation of a new traffic signal at Buddha Colony junction and violations in the main Santa Cruz Chembur Link Road. Its objective is to facilitate the passage of their long AC double decker buses to reach Kurla station. The move comes after several missteps and now the city is set to bear the brunt of potential traffic chaos. The SCLR, which was initially designed to streamline cross-city traffic and was funded by the World Bank, stretches for 6.45 kilometres.

A recent visit to the proposed site at New Mill Road Bridge (Hallow Bridge) revealed the existing disarray in the absence of signals. Adding a signal at this turn may worsen the traffic situation. Subhash Gupta of Passengers Association Mumbai has been critical, pointing to the gap between the new authorities and the ground reality. He highlighted the challenges posed by the ongoing Metro Line 2B construction, which includes heavy barricading and excavation at the site, leaving little space for bus diversion.

Commuters are facing frustration at Bandra-Kurla bus stops after the introduction of the new AC electric double-decker bus last week. Despite its stylish features, the bus faces hurdles in reaching Kurla station, Bandra station or the original 310 bus route terminus due to its height and technical constraints. As a result, BEST was forced to run two types of buses for the same route. The new AC double-decker bus, standing at a height of 4.75 metres, is higher than the 4.38 meters of the old non-AC bus fleet, making the SCLR difficult to navigate.

Critics like Kurla resident Jitendra Gupta of the Citizen Transport Committee suggest an alternative solution. He has proposed to deploy an AC minibus on a new route at LBS-BKC junction covering LBS Marg, Belgrami Road, Gol Building, Bharat Talkies, New Mill Road and Surve Chowk. However, Kurla traffic officials insist on the impracticality of installing or violating the signal at the congested junction, citing possible traffic queues and disruptions from different directions, especially in view of the ongoing Metro Line 2B work and existing pillars . BEST officials have expressed their intention to wait for the traffic police's response before finalizing any decision.
