Bharat Stage 4 (BSIV): What is it?

Let's first study the present BS4 (BSIV) emission requirements, engine, performance, and its relevance before learning about BS6 emissions or BS6 compliant engines.

The first emission standards, known as "India 2000," were introduced by theBombay Suburban Electric Supply (BSES), the country's regulatory body for emissions from all sorts of vehicles, in the year 2000. While BS2 and BS3 were first implemented in 2005 and 2010, respectively, BS4 norms with tougher emission limits or norms went into force in 2017.

Emission-related rules included those relating to tailpipe emissions, Electronic Control Units (ECU), ignition controls, etc. The Automatic Headlamp On (AHO) standard, one of the BS4 requirements that addressed the safety component of the new emission regulations, was the modification that was the most obvious.

Bharat Stage 6 (BSVI): What is it?

The original emission standard or norm was called "India 2000" and it was implemented in the year 2000. Later, in 2005 and 2010, BS2 and BS3 were introduced. The fourth emission standard, known as BS4, was implemented in 2017, although the preceding three were introduced at regular intervals.

The BS6 emission standard is the sixth generation of the emission norm, and in comparison to the previous BS4 standard, it represents a significant improvement in terms of lowering pollution. This is also due to the fact that the BS5 (BSV) was omitted in an effort to transition to improved emission standards.
