Exponent Energy's 15-minute EV charging tech revealed.

Exponent Energy, a tech startup based in Bengaluru, India, is making waves in the Electric Vehicle (EV) industry with its innovative approach to fast charging and cost-effective battery solutions. Unlike traditional EV charging methods that can take hours, Exponent Energy claims to charge 0-100% batteries in just 15 minutes for all types of electric vehicles in the industry.

The unique selling point of the company is the use of water as a differentiating factor for the fast charging process. The approach has attracted the attention of car enthusiasts and industry experts alike, as it promises to significantly reduce charging times and help democratize EV adoption in the market.

Backed by the prestigious Pawan Munjal Motherson Group, Exponent Energy is on a mission to revolutionise the EV landscape by offering a comprehensive solution for both fast charging and cost-effective batteries. The startup has focused its efforts on commercial vehicles in the medium term, aiming to address the unique challenges faced by the sector.

Arun Vinayak, Founder and CEO of Exponent Energy, sheds light on the development process of its groundbreaking technology. Charging an EV in just 15 minutes generates a significant amount of heat, which can lead to overheating problems if not managed properly. To address this challenge, the company developed a simple HVAC (HEATING, VENTILATION, AIR CONDITIONING) system integrated into its charging stations. The system uses refrigerated water at a temperature of 10°C to prevent the battery pack from overheating, ensuring optimum performance during the rapid charging process.

The breakthrough of the technology lies in its ability to maintain an ideal thermal range of 25-35°C, which greatly increases the efficiency and safety of the charging process. Vinayak highlighted that their cooling approach with liquid cooling achieves the best possible temperature of 50°C, which is a remarkable achievement in the industry.

For Exponent Energy, the democratization of EVs goes hand in hand with providing affordable solutions for customers. To achieve this, they decided to make their HVAC systems an integral part of their charging stations. By doing so, they have ensured that their technology is accessible to a wide range of customers including three wheeler operators.

The charging stations, known as e-pumps, are each designed to store 30 liters of water, which is efficiently recycled to reduce wastage. This unique feature has earned Exponent Energy a patent for its technology in India and some overseas markets.

In addition, the company's Battery Management System (BMS) plays a vital role in maintaining the health and longevity of the battery pack. An improper BMS can lead to problems such as Li-ion crowding, which can lead to significant cell degradation. Exponent Energy's BMS is designed to ensure efficient charging with minimal degradation to the battery cells, enhancing the overall performance and durability of the battery.

The startup's battery pack, consisting of LFP cells, has been rigorously tested by TUV India, an independent testing laboratory of TUV Nord Group, Germany. The results are impressive, with only 13% degradation observed after 3000 charging cycles of rapid charging. This achievement is said to be "3-4 times" better than the industry average, a testament to the reliability and efficiency of Exponent Energy's battery solutions.

Despite the remarkable progress made by Exponent Energy, it is important to note that consistent fast charging is generally not recommended to ensure the long-term health of an EV battery pack. However, with its comprehensive approach and a warranty of 3,000 charging cycles, the startup aims to offer a viable and sustainable solution to address the range anxiety associated with EVs.

Ultimately, Exponent Energy is an emerging force in the EV industry, driven by a commitment to democratizing EVs and making them more affordable for all. Their innovative use of water as a key differentiator for quick charging, coupled with cost-effective battery solutions, promises to shape the future of electric mobility and pave the way for a sustainable and eco-friendly transportation ecosystem.
