ACB arrests Navi Mumbai traffic cops for extorting autorickshaw driver.

The Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) has arrested two traffic constables of the Navi Mumbai police force for allegedly demanding a bribe of Rs 5,000 from an autorickshaw driver, it was reported on Tuesday.

Deputy Superintendent of Police Shivraj Mehetre, in-charge of Navi Mumbai ACB, told PTI that Praveen Rathod (33) and Namdev Gadhekar (35), both traffic constables assigned to Mahape traffic division, have been charged under prevention corruption Act.

The accused constables had detained an autorickshaw driver for traffic violations, seized his vehicle and allegedly demanded Rs 5,000 for his release.

After negotiations, he settled for Rs 2,000, but on Monday the ACB caught him taking bribe.

In a separate incident on September 6, the Anti-Corruption Bureau arrested two persons, one of whom was an official of a firm linked to the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA), for accepting a bribe of Rs 7,000 from a local. Internet service provider in Palghar district of Maharashtra.

The persons in question were identified as Ashok Kumar Suryabansharai (34), a field supervisor of a technical consultancy firm contracted by MMRDA, and Sahid Saleem Warsi (25), a private individual.

According to Dayanand Gawde, Deputy Superintendent of Police, Palghar Division of the ACB, Suryabansharai had demanded Rs 7,000 from a local internet service provider for permission to lay fiber optic cable on an electric pole located under the jurisdiction of MMRDA in Dahanu.

As the complainant told the ACB, Suryabansharai claimed that the money would be given to MMRDA to obtain permission to lay the cable.

ACB conducted a sting operation and caught Sahid who was taking bribe on behalf of Suryabansharai. After this the field supervisor was also arrested.

Both men were charged under the Prevention of Corruption Act.

Apart from this, an RTO inspector and a private person have been arrested for accepting a bribe of Rs 300 from a driver in exchange for allowing a vehicle to pass through a check post in Maharashtra's Palghar district.

The Thane unit of the ACB arrested RTO Thane vehicle inspector Niloba Jyothibha Tandele (48) and Sunil Bhoir (62) under the Prevention of Corruption Act. The accused inspector had allegedly demanded Rs 300 from the driver for allowing him to cross the Talasari RTO check post on Express Highway No. 48.

After taking the bribe, he let the vehicle go and was caught by ACB officials.
