Tata Motors recently launched updated versions of its popular Harrier and Safari SUVs. Currently both these vehicles are equipped with 2.0-litre diesel engine. However, the carmaker plans to introduce a turbo-petrol engine option within the next year.
Tata Motors introduced its new 1.5-litre TGDi 4-cylinder turbo-petrol engine at the Auto Expo 2023. This power plant claims 168 bhp and 280 Nm of torque and can be mated to a 6-speed manual or dual-clutch automatic gearbox.
The addition of a petrol engine to their lineup will allow Tata Motors to offer the Harrier and Safari at a slightly lower starting price. Currently, Harrier prices start at Rs 15.49 lakh, while Safari prices start at Rs 16.19 lakh (ex-showroom).
It is worth noting that rival brands like Mahindra, MG and Hyundai already offer petrol versions of their mid-size SUVs. Mahindra's Scorpio-N and XUV700 come with a 2.0-litre turbo-petrol engine, MG's Hector is powered by a 1.5-litre unit, and the Hyundai Alcazar also offers a 1.5-litre turbo-petrol engine option.
