The Maharashtra government reduced the value-added tax (VAT) on fuel and diesel on Sunday. The Value-added tax (VAT) on petrol has been decreased by Rs 2.08 per liter, while the VAT on diesel has been reduced by Rs 1.44 per liter. So, with the current excise tax drop, petrol costs Rs 111.35 per liter in Mumbai, while diesel costs Rs 97.28 per liter.

The current petrol price in Kolkata is Rs 106.03 per liter, while the diesel price is Rs 92.76 per liter. On Sunday, petrol costs Rs 102.63 a liter in Chennai, while diesel costs Rs 94.24. Petrol costs Rs 96.20 per liter in Chandigarh, Punjab, while diesel costs Rs 84.26 per liter.

Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman tweeted on Saturday, We are lowering the central excise tax on petrol by Rs 8 per liter and diesel by Rs 6 per liter. This would lower fuel prices by Rs 9.5 per liter and diesel prices by Rs 7 per liter. It will cost the government around Rs 1 lakh crore each year in income.

Furthermore, in response to the opposition, which accused the central government of cutting excise tax shared by states and duping people with "figure juggling," Sitharaman stated on Sunday that the excise duty deducted from petrol and diesel is not shareable with states.

"Basic Excise Duty (BED), Special Additional Excise Duty (SAED), Road & Infrastructure Cess (RIC), and Agriculture & Infrastructure Development Cess (AIDC) all form Excise Duty on fuel and diesel, Basic education is transferable between states. SAED, RIC, and AIDC are not transferable," the finance minister noted in a series of tweets.

The finance minister further stated that the excise tax cut of Rs 8 per liter on petrol and Rs 6 per liter on diesel (from today) has been totally absorbed by the Road & Infrastructure Cess (RIC).

In a tweet on Saturday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi stated, it is always people first for us! Today's choices, particularly the one pertaining to a large decline in gasoline and diesel prices, will have a good influence on a variety of industries, bring relief to our population, and increase the 'Ease of Living.'
