The East Jaintia Hills (EJH) district unit of the Khasi Students' Union (KSU) shut down the NHAI toll gate at Lumshnong on Thursday to ensure that no toll was collected from vehicles. This was done because it is alleged that neither the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) nor the EJH district administration have taken any action to repair the poorly maintained National Highway-6 (NH-6). The state of NH-6 has been worse every day, and the worst sections are in the district headquarters of Khliehriat and Umkiang, which are making driving difficult for everyone.
A group of KSU members, led by the president of the EJH unit, Streamy N Suchen, shut the toll gate and ordered all employees to stop obtaining tolls from moving vehicles. The Union had reportedly met with the Additional Deputy Commissioner of EJH and urged the official to contact the NHAI, according to the KSU. However, despite it being clear that the road's condition has been declining, they have not heard anything.
