Mahanagar Gas's BKC headquarters will be stormed by vehicle drivers in protest of a CNG price increase.

In May, auto drivers in the city intend to attack Mahanagar Gas's Bandra-Kurla Complex (BKC) headquarters, seeking a decrease in compressed Natural Gas (CNG) costs. The "historic" price increase in compressed natural gas rates, according to unions, has shattered the car industry's backbone.

Being a public transportation vehicle, the government has made it mandatory to run vehicles only on CNG fuel, which we have done with all autos. The government has also authorized and promoted private automobiles to run on CNG, which has increased the number of CNG users. Due to the high demand, the government has been compelled to import gas in addition to local supply, resulting in a price hike, said Mumbai auto drivers' union spokesman Shashank Sharad Rao.

The Maharashtra government owns 10% of Mahanagar Gas Limited (MGL), and we have addressed letters to both, urging that local manufacturing of CNG be made accessible at a lower cost to auto drivers. Furthermore, because automobiles are a kind of public transportation, CNG should be prioritized for us. Once this is completed, the costs of CNG in our category will immediately decrease. We, as initial stakeholders and public transportation, should be supplied CNG at the cost of manufacturing, Rao remarked.

This will also be in the greater public interest because vehicle prices will stay in the lower category when the CNG price increase is finally passed on to customers, he explained. To highlight all of these concerns, on May 17, we will lead a massive protest demonstration of auto drivers and all of our automobiles to the Bandra Kurla Complex, outside the Mahanagar Gas office, he said.

The price of Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) has been raised multiple times in the past due to an increase in import expenses. The fuel was imported to make up for a deficiency in local gas allocation in order to fulfil the growing demand for CNG and domestic Piped Natural Gas (PNG) sectors.
