How to Avoid an EV Battery Explosion and Keep Your Electric Vehicle and Batteries Safe?

In India, recent reports of electric scooters catching fire have sparked safety worries. Electric scooter sales have risen in recent years, but a string of fires has thrown a pall over the potential business. In less than a month, there have been five fires, one of which resulted in the death of an 80-year-old man.

To avert similar mishaps, the government intends to introduce new quality control methods for Electric Vehicle (EV) batteries. According to reports, industry participants are also focusing on improving technology and batteries. Okinawa Autotech has issued the recall of 3,215 Praise Pro electric scooters, citing a problem with the batteries. However, if you possess an electric car or want to get one, there are several key elements to consider in order to maintain your electric vehicle healthy and fire-proof.

The largest, most costly, and most significant component of your electric car is the battery. It is the driving force for electric automobiles. The Indian temperature and driving conditions are tough, therefore it's vital that you thoroughly grasp battery maintenance and charging needs.

Here are some suggestions for keeping your electric scooter safe and extending the life of its batteries:

  • Thermal Control
    • Thermal management in an EV battery is critical since it must work in extremely cold or extremely high temperatures. Protect your car and batteries against severe temperatures. Make sure you don't leave your EV parked in the blazing sun or in the cold for extended periods of time.
    • Park your electric car in the shade or plug it in so that its thermal management system operates only on grid power and maintains a consistent range of temperatures while in use.

    • If you discover that the battery shell has been broken or that water has entered the battery, immediately isolate and store it separately, and notify your dealer.
    • The battery and charger should be stored in a clean, dry, and ventilated area, away from corrosive compounds, at least 2 meters away from fire and heat sources, away from combustible substances, and disconnected from the battery.
    • If the lithium-ion battery overheats while charging, move the device away from combustible items and switch off the current supply. If you are riding in the car, you should immediately come to a complete stop. Never try to extinguish a lithium battery fire on your own. Instead, contact the emergency services.
  • Check your vehicle's batteries on a regular basis.
    • Unlike in gasoline vehicles, battery levels may deplete if the electric vehicle is parked and not in use for an extended length of time. So, constantly keep track of when you last charged it.
  • Avoid leaving batteries totally charged or completely empty. Keep it between 20% and 80%.
    • Whenever feasible, keep your battery's state of charge between 20% and 80%. Charging the battery to full over and again will cause it to deteriorate faster.
  • Only charge in full for extended journeys.
    • Don't leave your car idling for lengthy periods of time. It's excellent for the vehicle's overall health, just like it is for petrol or diesel automobiles, to take it for a trip every now and again.
  • Avoid quick charging.
    • Fast-charging is a tremendous convenience if your batteries are about to die. However, it pushes so much current into the batteries in such a short amount of time that it stresses and damages your EV battery quickly. While the difference is subtle, eight years of regular charging will offer you 10% greater battery life than eight years of rapid charging.
