The Honda Elevate has become quite popular in the Indian market, leading to an increase in sales for the Japanese brand. Honda, which is known for offering hybrid versions with the City sedan, is now gearing up its Tapukara plant for the production of electric vehicles.
According to information received from ACI, Honda's first electric vehicle will be based on Honda Elevate SUV. The vehicle will be manufactured at the Tapukara plant, which is currently the only production facility in India. Honda's first electric vehicle is set to hit the Indian market in 2025.
Although the new Elevate is not built on a platform specifically designed for electric vehicles, it represents Honda's entry into the growing electric vehicle segment, which is currently dominated by Tata Motors. The electric vehicle based on the Elevate has not been named yet, but it will arrive in the Indian market when the electric vehicle market is expected to be more established.
Currently, the Nexon EC, MG ZS EV and the Hyundai Kona EV are the only mass-market electric SUVs available in India. Based on Honda Elevate, this electric car will compete with ZS EV and Kona EV. By the time Honda introduces its new electric car, expect more offerings in this segment, including the Tata Harrier EV.
Although there is no information available about the range of the upcoming electric car, based on official estimates its range is likely to be around 500 kilometers.
It is worth noting that the Elevate is based on the City platform and is currently offered with a single powertrain option. There is no hybrid option for the Elevate like the Honda City. However, the car is selling well, with around 10,000 units sold thanks to its single-engine option.
Under the hood, the Honda Elevate features a 1.5-litre four-cylinder naturally aspirated petrol engine, paired exclusively with a 6-speed manual or CVT gearbox. This well-tuned gasoline engine delivers an impressive 119 horsepower and 145 Newton-meters of peak torque. In terms of fuel efficiency, it stands at 15.31 km/l with manual transmission and 16.92 km/l with the automatic option.
