Continental creates the lightweight "Green Caliper" brake for electric vehicles.

Delhi: Continental, a German technology company, has revealed the creation of the Green Caliper, a new lightweight brake design for disc brakes.

The business claims that it is lighter than earlier models and has a reduced residual braking torque. It will be beneficial afterwards. This will enable further improvements in range. The decreased mass of the brakes, which may be as low as five kilogrammes per brake, and the reduced friction between the brake pad and the disc work together to extend the range of an electric car.

The brakes on an electric automobile are used far less frequently than those on a conventional vehicle. This is because recuperation prevents the need for the brake in more than 80% of all deceleration scenarios. This does not imply that the Green Caliper can perform less than a typical brake calliper, though. On the other hand, an electric car's brake deceleration performance frequently has to be significantly greater due to the weight of the battery. On the other hand, because they utilise the brake considerably less frequently, their thermal burden is reduced. The new brake calliper design has been tuned specifically for this altered need profile, according to the car component manufacturer.

According to Dominik Hiss, head of Continental's Product Center for Friction Brakes and Hydraulic Brake Systems, “improving efficiency is a key component of the optimization of electric cars. The range of the vehicle increases with lesser electrical energy loss. ”

The brake pads are thinner and smaller on the Green Caliper because they wear out more slowly, and the cast iron fist calliper is more compact, according to the manufacturer. As a result, the calliper has a lower mass.

A bigger cast iron brake disc may be installed because of the smaller brake caliper's lower bridge height. The disc can be made thinner, which further reduces weight, because of the decreased heat load. The braking performance is also excellent since the brake contacts farther out on the bigger disc and generates significant deceleration power with the same clamping effort because to the longer lever arm.
