A portion of Ashram Road will be permanently closed next year.

The 750 meter stretch of Ashram Road from Cargo Motors to RTO is going to be closed permanently from December this year. The bandh is in connection with two important projects: the Vadaj Ramdevpir Tekra slum rehabilitation initiative and the development of the Gandhi Ashram memorial and complex.

To deal with the problem of closure of Ashram Road, a new 18 meter wide road is being constructed next to Cargo Motors. This new route will be connected to the proposed 24 meter wide road through the Prabodh Rawal bridge, which will eventually connect to the 132 feet Ring Road. Additionally, the road on the west bank of the Sabarmati Riverfront will provide direct access to a 24-metre road through Ramapir Tekra, which will provide direct connectivity to the main Ranip GSRTC bus stand. The process of reclaiming the land to facilitate these developments is currently underway.

Apart from closing the Ashram Road, the AMC (Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation) is planning to set up a new road network for the Vadaj slum rehabilitation and Gandhi Ashram rehabilitation projects. This includes construction of new road near Khadi Gramodyog and road on drain of Mehsana Society. The Town Planning Scheme T for the area is also being revised, with plans for more than 10 new internal roads in both the Gandhi Ashram complex and the Wadj slum redevelopment projects.

Road projects worth Rs 48.70 crore and extensive street lighting overhaul worth Rs 16.38 crore are going to take place in the entire 55-acre area.
