Instead of manually unlocking the doors with a key, some new automobiles are keyless which means you can simply walk up to the car with your key fob and the car will send a code to unlock the doors. This signal, however, only works over a very small distance. Once inside, press the start button to start the engine.
While this is a fascinating new piece of technology, it does raise some security issues. Everything you need to know about keyless auto theft and how to protect your vehicle is right here.
How are they able to be taken?
Car thieves are taking advantage of this technology by deploying gadgets that magnify the signal and send it over a longer distance. Two devices are used: one outside your home that picks up the signal from your key inside and sends it to the second device next to your car. This tricks the automobile into believing the real key is close, causing it to open and start.
Who is in Risk?
Although newer and more costly cars are more vulnerable, an opportunist thief will take any car they can get their hands on, so it's critical to take precautions to keep your car safe.
To avoid being caught off guard, follow these guidelines:
To keep auto thieves out of your house, make sure your doors and windows are closed at all times. This will not only reduce the likelihood of the key's signal being amplified, but it will also prevent burglars from snatching the keys.
Keep your car keys away from windows and doors, preferably in a metal container, to avoid the signal being detected outside your home.
Contact your dealer to see if the key's signal may be turned off at night.
For steering wheels or wheel clamps, use old-fashioned locks. Installing a tracker has the advantage of giving you a much better chance of recovering your automobile if the worst happens and it is stolen. The accuracy and usefulness of trackers are largely determined by your budget, so keep an eye out for high membership prices.
If feasible, store your car in a garage; if not, park it safely in a well-lit area and make sure it is locked, windows are closed, and valuables are removed. Keep an eye out for unusual activity in your neighborhood and report it to the police.
