The initial car manufactured in India.

The first car to be manufactured in India was the Hindustan Ambassador. The Ambassador was based on the Morris Oxford series III model, and production began in 1957. The Hindustan Motors Limited, based in Kolkata, West Bengal, was responsible for manufacturing the Ambassador.

Over the years, the Ambassador became an iconic car in India, known for its spacious interiors and sturdy design. It gained popularity as a government and official vehicle and remained in production for several decades. However, with changes in consumer preferences, evolving safety and emission standards, and increased competition from international automakers, the production of the Hindustan Ambassador faced challenges, and its presence in the market diminished over time. Production officially ceased in 2014, marking the end of an era for this historic Indian automobile.
