Pune RTO suspends 700+ licenses from Apr '23 to Jan '24.

According to authorities, the Regional Transport Office (RTO) has already exceeded the number of driver's license suspensions for traffic offenses in the current fiscal year compared to the previous one. A total of 750 licenses were suspended from April 2023 to January 2024, surpassing the 564 suspensions in 2022–2023. Despite this increase, the number of license suspensions remains relatively low when compared to the total traffic infractions recorded by the traffic police.

For example, in the calendar year 2023 (January to December), a total of 10.33 lakh traffic violation cases were registered. The state transport department has mandated license suspensions ranging from three to six months for drivers committing six or more infractions. Offenses such as driving under the influence result in a six-month suspension, while reckless driving, speeding, signal jumping, phone use while driving, overloading goods vehicles, and transporting passengers in non-transport vehicles lead to a three-month suspension.

In 2023, the traffic police reported 11,739 instances of talking on the phone while driving, 14,433 cases of driving on the wrong side of the road, and 66,733 cases of signal jumping. Senior traffic police officers express concern, particularly regarding the growing issue of phone use while driving, leading to license suspensions.

A senior Pune Traffic Police officer emphasized that using a cell phone while driving is a highly dangerous offense, as it can result in distracted attention and multiple accidents. To address this, the traffic police take swift action, issuing tickets to violators promptly.

However, some citizens feel that more stringent measures are necessary, as they observe numerous instances of people driving while using phones and neglecting to wear helmets. They believe that the current level of suspensions is insufficient, emphasizing the need for increased enforcement.
