NHAI Introduces an Enhanced Traffic Management System.

National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) is set to enhance road safety and improve incident response time by implementing updated and visionary Advanced Traffic Management System (ATMS) standards and specifications for 2023.

These specifications include the latest advancements in AI technology with the goal of strengthening road safety and enabling digital traffic rule enforcement on national highways and expressways.

Notable upgrades include newly introduced video incident detection and enforcement systems (VID) in place of traditional cameras, designed to focus on digital enforcement of traffic rules. VIDE has the capability to detect 14 different incidents, including violations such as triple riding, helmet and seatbelt non-compliance, driving in the wrong lane or direction, presence of animals on highways and pedestrian crossings. Based on the identified incident, Vides will immediately alert route patrol vehicles or ambulances, issue e-challan, relay messages on nearby convertible messaging boards and send notifications to nearby travelers through the RajmargYatra mobile app.

These cameras are planned to be installed at intervals of 10 kilometers on national highways, with advanced command and control centers every 100 kilometers to integrate different camera feeds. Additionally, Vehicle Speed Detection Systems (VSDS) are now integrated into vehicles, optimizing the use of Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) cameras.

The Traffic Monitoring Camera System (TMCS) will also get an upgrade, allowing automatic detection of accidents and stopped vehicles.

To enhance collaboration with local traffic agencies, NHAI will allocate dedicated workspaces in command and control centers for traffic police representatives. Provision has been made for sharing camera feeds over the network, enhancing real-time coordination and response.

ATMS deployment can also play an important role in disaster management by providing valuable inputs for effective planning and implementation. Further, it will facilitate online sharing of highway status and other essential information to benefit both the concerned agencies and highway users.
