Insights into Dwarka Expressway: Delhi-Gurgaon Link Features

Today, on March 11, Prime Minister Narendra Modi is scheduled to inaugurate the Haryana section of the Dwarka Expressway, a pivotal infrastructure project aimed at improving traffic flow and alleviating congestion between Delhi and Gurugram on National Highway-48.

Key Highlights:
1. Length and Cost: The 19-km-long Haryana section of the eight-lane Dwarka Expressway was constructed at a cost of approximately Rs 4,100 crore. It comprises two packages: the 10.2-km Delhi-Haryana Border to Basai Rail-over-Bridge (ROB) and the 8.7-km Basai ROB to Kherki Daula.

2. Connectivity: The expressway provides direct connectivity to the Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGI) in Delhi and Gurugram Bypass. It is expected to enhance overall connectivity in the Delhi-NCR region.

3. Innovative Design: The elevated expressway incorporates an innovative design that conserves land and includes wider service roads. It prohibits ribbon development along its route and prioritizes safety with features such as an 8-lane tunnel near IGI Airport, complete with an emergency exit and a dedicated control room. Additionally, a blastproof design has been implemented for the tunnel section closest to the airport.

4. Traffic Segregation: Predominantly a flyway, 75% of the Dwarka Expressway's total length is elevated, segregating expressway and city traffic. This design, with four-level interchanges at strategic points, aims to alleviate future traffic congestion.

5. Gurgaon Section Inauguration: The inauguration will cover the Gurgaon section from the Dwarka border to the Delhi-Jaipur highway (NH8), with plans for the Delhi section opening later.

6. Project Background: The Dwarka Expressway has been in the making for over 18 years, facing delays due to land acquisition issues and legal battles. Construction finally commenced in 2019, with the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) taking a pivotal role.

7. Toll Collection Uncertainty: Toll collection remains a point of concern, and it's uncertain whether commuters will be charged. Recent statements by Union Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari regarding toll plaza locations add to the uncertainty.

The inauguration of the Dwarka Expressway signifies a significant step towards addressing traffic challenges, enhancing connectivity, and showcasing innovative engineering solutions in the Delhi-NCR region.
