87% of Indians choose petrol cars this festive season.

Data shows that 87% of Indian consumers chose petrol vehicles, likely influenced by lower initial costs, lower maintenance expenses and the ability of petrol vehicles to stay on the road for up to 15 years. Among the various body styles, hatchbacks dominated with 65% share in total sales. With Maruti Suzuki as the preferred brand, popular models like Swift, Baleno, Grand i10, Alto and Kwid attracted first-time car buyers. With high demand for models like Vitara Brezza, Ford EcoSport, Ertiga, Creta and Nexon, SUVs grabbed the second position in preferences among used car buyers. The Ford Endeavor emerged as the most expensive car purchased during this season, and silver emerged as the most popular color among buyers.

Bengaluru witnessed the highest number of car sales this festive season, while in Kochi, car sales during Onam doubled compared to last year. Mumbai and Pune saw a two-fold increase in car purchases during Ganesh Chaturthi, with WagonR and Honda City leading the way. Ahmedabad and Delhi saw a 67% increase in car sales during Navratri, especially models like the Grand i10 and Baleno.

Cars24 reported staggering car sales worth Rs 1,760 crore during the festive season, with Delhi leading among metro cities. Lucknow had the highest number of car sellers in metropolitan markets, followed by Pune and Ahmedabad. On the Cars24 platform, the cheapest cars sold were the Maruti 800 and Zen, while the most expensive was the Mercedes-Benz E Class.

During the festive season, loans worth an average of Rs 4.7 crore were disbursed daily, with the majority of applications coming from young salaried professionals below 35 years of age. Cars24 processes over 500 loan applications daily, providing a used car loan every 10 minutes. Maruti and Hyundai were the most financed car brands, with the Hyundai Grand i10 receiving the highest loan.
