DC Yadav insists on adherence to safety norms for school buses in Gurugram.

RTO officials said that sub-divisional officers are currently assigned the task of inspecting the bus fleet of at least five schools every month. Since January this year, 23 schools have received notices and challans have been issued against 36 buses for violating safety norms.

Gurugram's Deputy Commissioner Nishant Kumar Yadav expressed concern over the negligence of many schools in the city regarding student transport. The bus drivers are allegedly flouting safety norms despite repeated instructions from the district administration. Yadav announced that it would now be the responsibility of the administration officials to conduct monthly school bus inspections to ensure proper implementation of safety rules. He urged the schools to rectify any shortfall within two weeks, else warned of strict action.

Yadav gave this message to around 200 school directors, principals and transport in-charges at an event organized by the Gurugram Regional Transport Office (RTO) at Udyog Vihar. The objective of the event was to raise awareness about the Safe School Vehicle policy of the Government of Haryana for safe transportation and to highlight common violations that compromise student safety.

Yadav stressed the need for schools to follow safety guidelines, as parents in the district are highly vigilant and express concerns quickly on social media. He warned that the violation could lead to serious incidents, adding that the school in-charge and the transport department would be held responsible for any mishap.

During the meeting, Road Safety Associate Girish Gupta and Keshika highlighted various important issues which require immediate attention. These include improper color coding and documentation, lack of grills and reflective tape, tinted windows, poor emergency doors with inadequate locking systems, improperly installed CCTV systems for drivers and conductors, use of expired drugs and drivers without proper background checks. Addressing these issues was stated to be important to ensure student safety.
